Steel Spider
Steel Spider is all about helping North American steel buyers and sellers make one
to one connections so they can easily and inexpensively communicate, trade and build
relationships with one another. We host five platforms steel buyers and sellers
use to exchange information about steel and related services for sale. Confidentiality
of the relationship between a buyer and a seller is maintained because negotiations
and transactions between the buyer and the seller occur off-site and without our
participation.
We believe that we economically provide increased efficiency to steel trading. Sellers
can quickly inform potential buyers of the steel they have available for sale. Buyers
can quickly find the steel that may meet their requirements and immediately contact
the seller directly. Buyers can also broadcast their specific steel requirements
to many sellers who deal in the type of steel they are looking for. We have been
serving the steel trading community for over 10 years and have aggregated a loyal
following of steel buyers and sellers using Steel Spider.
We generate revenue only from sellers (not buyers) through listing fees, lead referral
fees and advertising fees. Some of the services available to sellers are currently
available at no charge. We strive to make this site just a damn site better.
We provide five platforms for steel buyers and sellers to use:
Inventory, Offering,
Inquire,
Auction and Facility Directory.
-
Multi-Supplier Inventory is the cornerstone of Steel Spider. We maintain
an inventory database of thousands of steel items in stock and available for sale
from over a hundred steel sellers. A buyer (without charge) can search this inventory
database (Search for Steel) by steel form, type, physical
dimensions, weight, location and other criteria. The Find Steel button produces
a list of steel that matches the buyer's requirements. The buyer then clicks on
the name of the company on any items of interest to immediately see the name and
contact information of the person selling the item. The buyer can also save his
search criteria so Steel Spider can send him an email when steel matching his criteria
is added to the Inventory. This Inventory Alert is a
free service for registered buyers.
Steel sellers can add their steel to the Inventory two ways. They can use
Post Steel to Inventory to manually add each of their steel items individually
at no charge. Alternatively they can provide descriptions of their steel in a file
(or multiple files) and we will handle the adding of their steel to the Inventory.
We set up an Automatic Data Entry process that reads the
file(s) and adds the steel to the inventory. There is a fixed monthly fee for this
but there is no limit to the number of steel items a seller can add in this manner.
Included in this fee is the ability for the seller to have his logo appear randomly
on the border of each page of this site. Within an hour after a seller's steel is
added to the Inventory, an Inventory Alert is emailed
to notify a buyer of any steel that was added that matches their criteria.
The inventory includes steel available in bar, coil, irregular blanks, plate, sheet,
pipe, tube, structural (Beams, Channel, etc.), wire and rod forms. The condition
of the steel includes prime, excess prime, secondary and surplus. Sellers can use
Change/Remove your Steel to update, edit and delete
their steel in the multi-supplier inventory. Sellers using Automatic
Data Entry can simply send a new file to replace the steel in a previous
file as often as they wish.
The Inventory platform and the Offering Platform are complementary platforms for
sellers to advertise their available steel. Both the Offerings platform and the
Inventory platform can notify buyers when steel is added.
- Offering
is a platform where a seller can Send an Offering
by email to multiple steel buyers. Buyers sign-up to Receive
Offerings by identifying the form and type of steel they are interested
in receiving Offerings for. Offering is used by sellers to describe steel in large
quantities sold as a single lot, special deals, truck, railcar or barge quantities.
Sellers can attach a file to their Offering email to provide additional information
about their available steel.
Offerings are not intended to be used by the seller for a small number of steel
items. Add small number of steel items to the Inventory using
Post Steel to Inventory to manually add their steel items. Both Offerings
and Inventory notify buyers when steel is added. Offerings can not be changed or
removed but items in Inventory can.
Buyers can be very specific as to what steel they are interested in being notified
of when they use the Inventory Alert. Buyers receive
Inventory Alerts only for the steel added to the Inventory that they are most likely
to be interested in. Offerings are distributed by steel form and type only. Buyers
receiving Offerings will be notified about all offerings for a particular form and
type of steel. Sellers need to consider that if a buyer receives too many Offerings
that are not of interest to him, he could stop receiving any Offerings and rely
only on the Inventory Alert to let him know about added
steel.
In addition to sending Offerings to those on Steel Spider who have requested them,
Offerings can also be sent by email to buyers the seller knows. We have a
Contact List where a seller can identify the email addresses of those buyers
he knows and sends his offerings to. To see what Offerings have been sent,
View Recent Offerings is chronological listing of recent offers sent to
buyers using Steel Spider.
- Inquire
is a platform where a buyer can Send an Inquiry by email
to multiple steel sellers. Sellers sign-up to Receive
Inquiries by identifying the products they deal in. An Inquiry can be a
Request for Quote (RFQ) or a Request for Information (RFI). Buyers can attach a
file to their Inquiry email to provide additional information about their requirements.
In addition to sending an Inquiry to those on Steel Spider who have requested them,
an Inquiry can also be sent by email to sellers the buyer knows. We have a
Contact List where a buyer can identify the email addresses of those sellers
he knows and wants to send his Inquiry to. For examples of Inquiries, go to
View Recent Inquiries under Inquire to see a summary if some of the Inquiries
sent in the past week or two.
- Auction
is a platform where a seller can run live, ascending auctions for a single item.
A seller can also run an auction for Bid List where multiple items can be auctioned
at the same time. Proxy bidding does not apply. A bid is considered to be the amount
the bidder is willing to pay.
The auctions are invitational in that the seller identifies which buyers can bid
in his auction using a personalized Contact List.
Go to Enter an Auction to enter those auctions where
you have been authorized to bid and visible Auctions. Buyers need to sign-up to
Receive Auction Notices. Sellers can set-up and
run their Single Item Auction.
- Facility
Directory is a searchable Facility Directory
containing the location, capabilities and materials used or processed by a seller's
facility. Buyers can search the Facility Directory by company name, material handled
and processing capabilities. Sellers can Add Your company
to the Facility Directory.
Contact List
Registered users can maintain a list of their personal contacts on Steel Spider.
This list of contacts is used by sellers to identify the approved bidders in auctions
and to send Offerings. Buyers can use the Contact List to send inquiries to some
or all of the people in their Contact List.
Registration
Registration is free. Registration allows you to use
certain features where your contact information is needed. Buyers can find and buy
steel using our Multi-Supplier Inventory and Offerings without registering. Registration
allows Buyers to receive email or fax Inventory Alerts when the steel that is offered
for sale in the Multi-Supplier Inventory changes. Registration is required to send
an Inquiry and to bid in Auctions. Sellers need to register to advertise their steel
in the inventory, to send Offerings, to receive Inquiries and to run Auctions.
General
Transactions do not take place on Steel Spider. They are handled off-line between
the buyer and the supplier. Buyers and sellers each determine whether and on what
terms they should deal with each other. Steel Spider does not take possession of
an item being sold or the buyer's payment for the item. The buyer and the seller
independently arrange for the payment and shipping as well as any additional processing
or services provided by the seller. We do not own, sell, trade or broker steel.
No commissions are paid to Steel Spider on transactions that result from the use
of Steel Spider. Mountain Hawk Corp. and steelspider.com make no warranties as to
the reliability of any users contacted through this website. Users of this website
